Set Your Phasers to iPhone

by Blogger on 05-22-2009 07:48 AM - last edited on 09-10-2009 04:05 PM by Moderator

Never mind the less filling, tastes great debate, a more serious battle has been waged in the message boards of the web for decades: Star Trek or Star Wars? Live Long and Prosper or Use The Force? Kirk or Luke? Spock or Yoda?

Tribbles or Ewoks? Chekov or Chewbacca? Uhura or Leia? Khan or Vader? Phaser or Lightsaber?

It is the ultime nerd battle, but unlike as with the Highlander, there need not be only one.  Go ahead, love them both - on your iPhone.

When the iPhone App store was launched last summer, one of the first must haves was the PhoneSaber app.  Originally from the dark side, it was eventually accepted into the THQ Wireless fold and officially sanctioned as Lightsaber.  The free version is simple.  It plays some of the brilliantly epic John Williams score while turning your screen into the blue, green, red or purple light saber of your favourite character.

It's good fun, turn off the lights in the apartment and re-enact some of the legendary Star Wars duels.

As Star Trek dominates the box office this spring, you knew the companion iPhone Phaser app would be released.  There are many, but the officially sanctioned one is free and easily turns your phone into a phaser with the mandatory Kill and Stun settings.  You can play on your own in a target practice mode, or hook up against an opponent over Wifi (just make sure you're not a red shirted dude).  There's also some bonus video clips and galleries from the movie.

To be honest, it's not the greatest bit of game play, it's just something to play with when your buddy whips out his Jar Jar Binks costume - whether you set phaser to stun or kill depends how good of a pal he is.

catch the buzz ... pass it on

Lol, and if you like, you can battle your BlackBerry Storm enemies... we also have the Storm Light Saber, and I'm sure we'll soon have a Phaser as well :smileytongue:.
