If you do not require colour, my answer is forget inkjet printer; go with an inexpensive laser instead.

If you print infrequently, laser is a good way to go because there is no liquid ink that can dry up.
However, note that the price of consumables for laser printers have been increasing over the years. Last time I checked, about a year ago, the basic black lasers were averaging 7 cents per page.
If you buy an inkjet printer, I highly recommend BROTHER.
Those printers have the opportunity to achieve a per page cost at a fraction of laser! Furthermore, the cost of electricity of running an inkjet printer is also a fraction of running a laser printer. To top that off, you also get colour printing, photo printing, etc. And it's usually cheaper to buy than lasers! And don't forget it usually comes with more features than a basic laser printer (such as scanner, copier, fax).

That is an interesting question....because the people who benefit most from Kodak's low cost inks are those that print a lot. Basically, the more you print, the more you save! To a person who prints a lot, the cost of the ink is more significant than the cost of the printer itself.
But...infrequent use is the exact opposite. If you don't use much ink, then the cost of the printer is much more significant than the cost of the ink. If you don't intend to use the printer much, then you'll spend less in the long run with a lower cost printer.

I use lasr printer Samsung ML 4500 for 7 years and one cartridge is good for 1 year (round 92 CAD+ tax). Refilling was no good for me (the powder went out).
will buy a new Samsung only because I need a USB interface.
